Someday Never Comes

You won’t find someday on the calendar. You will find next week, next year, even the next solar eclipse. (It’s soon!) But for some reason, someday, just isn’t there. Even so, people are always planning things for someday. Someday I’ll write that letter. Someday I’ll go to Alaska. Someday I’ll own a food truck and sell crêpes all across the country. Whenever someday does arrive, it’s going to be freaking awesome.

I got tired of waiting so I decided to change all my plans from someday to plans for September. (It’s on the calendar right after August.) Turns out I had a lot scheduled for someday:

  • Travel across the country

  • Climb 5.10 Trad

  • Clean room

  • Get published in a 'real' magazine

  • Learn to shoot/edit video

  • Replace Netflix with bookstores

  • Make new friends

  • Learn to surf

  • Visit childhood home

  • Try ice climbing

  • Learn how to change your own oil

  • Take photos you’re proud of

  • Live off the grid

  • Bathe in a mountain lake

  • See a penguin in the wild.

I’m not sure September will be long enough so I’ve given myself the rest of the year...

Progress Update: Subfloor

The subfloor is almost done! After patching the holy floors with fiberglass, I finally got to load up the old Tiguan and start cutting plywood. Beneath the plywood is a layer of foam insulation and a layer of Reflectix foil which will hopefully help to keep the van cool/warm.

As for the layout, it’s likely the bed will take up most of the back half of the van, with storage underneath. Then just behind the driver’s seat I’d like to install a sink. Other than that probably just some more storage cubbies and I’ll be good to go.

I am still struggling to decide how to affix the solar panel to my van. The roof is quite uneven so I’m not sure if bolting it directly through the fiberglass is the best choice. I’d love to have roof racks but the extended roof means that most standard rain-gutter install van racks won’t fit.

Also still exploring lighting options for the van. LEDs are certainly the way to go for efficiency purposes (all interior lights will run off the solar-charged battery), but I’m certainly not an artist (despite my Bachelor of Arts) so I’m having trouble visualizing exactly what to get and where to put them. Any interior designers out there???

Just over a month to go and the Home Depot count is up to 15. Shout outs to Saraphina Redalieu and Hobie Ponting (once again) for showing me the wonderful ways of West Systems. Sara just launched a fun blog of her own about her recent trip to La Camina De Santiago. She’s a hiker, climber, and general outdoorsy folk who also happens to be a kick ass writer.

Until next time, Scott

Progress!
